Parson Russells are cheeky, entertaining pets. Parson Russells do well with considerate children but do not like to be teased. Parson Russells need a dominant owner experienced in firm obedience training. The Parson Russell Terrier has strong hunting instincts and should not be trusted with small animals. This scrappy Terrier may fight with dogs with which he is not socialized from an early age. Parson Russells can live in an apartment but need plenty of exercise and do best with a yard. Parson Russells can climb and dig under fences, and need to be kept on a leash when walking.

A Parson Russell Terrier saved five New Zealand children from being attacked by two pit bulls in 2007. Parson Russell Terriers are descended from fox terriers bred by Parson John Russell in England in the early 1800s. Parson Russell's Terrier, Trump, was depicted in a painting commissioned by Edward VII, Prince of Wales, who was a friend of the parson. Parson Russell Terriers are considered by some to be the most intelligent dog breed.
